It will not be long before the number of Filipino basketball players in the NBA starts if Kai Sotto and Fil-Am Jalen Green succeed in the G League.
According to Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams, being part of the two-player developmental program is a big boost for the NBA in the Filipino players.
He said, if the Filipino ballers continue to grow and even if one of them is popular with Sotto or Green, he sees the possibility that the Philippines will imitate Canada with the sudden increase in the number of NBA players.
“The Canadians, they are just north of the border, there weren’t that many Canadians who had pushed themselves into the level of high-level college players,” Williams said in the Republic Huddle podcast.
“And now, you see this influx, Jamal Murrays, (Andrew) Wiggins, and all these guys coming from Canada. Like, it’s just starting to happen every single year. Started with one or two men’s back in the day, ”he added.
The NBA head coach believes that it is possible for the Philippines to bring up to 10 to 15 players in the NBA if they continue with the basketball programs to strengthen the local talents.
